¿DO GENDER STEREOTYPES STILL EXIST IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION? THE VIEWS OF ADOLESCENT GIRLS

 

 

ABSTRACT

 

Physical education can be a subject of transformation or reproduction of traditional gender models. Teachers, through the hidden curriculum that they make present in their classes and that are perceived by the adolescent, are a key piece in this process. The aim of this study is to identify the perception of adolescent girls about the transformative or reproductive orientation of traditional models and gender relations transmitted by the physical education teachers. A total of 9 focus groups have been made up of 7-8 girls from 4th of ESO and 1st from Bachillerato. Results show that girls perceive the presence of gender stereotypes in communication, the level of demand and the way in which groups are organized by teachers. Given this perception, the need to train the physical education teachers in a gender perspective to transform their hidden curriculum in order to improve physical education, work under the concept of coeducation, and promote equal opportunities in society.
