CRITICAL REVIEW OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN THE SPORTS PRESS (2012-2018): IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

A narrative review of scientific research on gender inequality reproduced in the sports press of Ibero-America is presented. It is noted that the sports press would have an important role in the reproduction of a patriarchal perspective of sport. Through a qualitative method, empirical research associated with the sports press and gender inequality, published during the years 2012-2018, was analysed. The data was analysed with a descriptive-interpretative approach, from frequency tables and content coding. The results show the presence of sexist corporal stereotypes and negative bias for female sports. These stereotypes are part of an androcentric culture that reproduces gender violence. In this way, the sports press contributes to the subjective-emotional configuration of schoolchildren. Consequently, through critical physical education, teachers have the challenge of deconstructing the rationalities of gender inequality present in the sporting context.
