Guiding and maximizing the cardiorespiratory endurance training adaptations requires a proper management of the variables that define the training load; mainly volume, intensity and density. Following a thorough review and clarification of terminology about the sources or pathways of energy production, as well as a brief description of the most accepted assessments or tests used to detect the performance of each one, the authors carried out a detailed methodological approach of the development of different functional capabilities, which encompass cardiorespiratory endurance. In relation to the intensity of effort, generally acknowledged as the most important variable which will further guide the cardiorespiratory adaptations, this methodological approach draws on the main variables that are commonly used in sport performance assessments and endurance training prescription: Maximum Oxygen Uptake (% VO2max), Maximum Heart Rate (HRmax), Heart Rate Reserve (HRreserve), Maximal Aerobic Velocity (%MAV) and capillary Blood Lactate Concentration ([lact]).
